Abilify (Aripiprazole)
Abilify (Aripiprazole) is an antipsychotic medication used to treat mental/mood disorders such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and as an adjunct in major depressive disorder. It can also be used to treat irritability associated with autistic disorder. Aripiprazole works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain.
How to Use:
- Take Abilify as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily with or without food.
- Dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, age, and other medications you may be taking.
Dosage Forms:
- Abilify is available in tablet form, an orally disintegrating tablet, a liquid form, and as an injectable form.
- The tablet forms come in doses of 2 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, and 30 mg.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, and restlessness.
- Serious side effects can include seizures, severe nervous system reaction, high blood sugar, and increased risk of death in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.
Precautions:
- Before taking Abilify, inform your doctor about any allergies, personal or family history of diabetes, heart diseases, blood pressure issues, and conditions related to low white blood cell count.
- This medication may make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely.
